Three kinds of WhatsApp AI tools.
Search for a WhatsApp AI tool and you get very different products. Here is how they differ, so you can pick the one that fits.
The main kinds.
| Kind | How it works | Reads your existing chats? | Works with your own agent? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal-chat connectors | Links to your WhatsApp as a device. Your agent reads the chats you allow. | Yes, the ones you choose | Yes, through MCP or email |
| Browser extensions | Run inside WhatsApp Web on your computer when you open it. | Yes, while the page is open | Usually no; they have their own AI |
| Bot assistants | You message an assistant’s WhatsApp number. | No, only what you send or forward | No, the bot is the agent |
| Business platforms | Use the WhatsApp Business API for customer chats. | No, only the business number | Sometimes, for business chats |
Which one do you need?
- You already use an AI agent and want it to know what happens in your groups: a personal-chat connector.
- You want an AI summary only while you look at WhatsApp: a browser extension.
- You want an assistant to text with: a bot assistant.
- You run a business and want AI to answer customers: a business platform.
Where wa2agent fits.
wa2agent is a hosted personal-chat connector. It reads selected personal chats, read-only, for the agent you already use. Each user gets a separate vault, and stored messages are encrypted with a key only your agent holds.
Its limits: text messages only, nothing from before you link, and selected messages kept for 30 days. Access is by invitation for now. It links as a device rather than through the WhatsApp Business API, so WhatsApp’s terms apply; the Terms explain this.
Questions to ask any tool.
- Which chats can it see, and can I change that?
- Can it send messages as me?
- Where are my messages stored, and who can read them?
- Does my computer or phone need to stay on?
- Does it use the WhatsApp Business API or link as a device?
